Unique life of Joe Cahn
From Special Reports and other Internet Sites
Joe Cahn is a unique personality. One look at this jovial character, with his bald head sometimes glittered, often sporting a crown, and unusual beard will tell you that. Joe was born in New Orleans, and has lived there all his life. His background and experiences have been as colorful and varied as the city itself.
>After a stint as a business major at L.S.U., Joe has held many different jobs, including offshore worker, professional photographer and French Quarter buggy driver. He settled into the bar and restaurant business almost by accident, and yet it was there that Joe's love of people, food and the fun of sharing good feelings with others found the best place to flourish.
In 1980, Joe created the New Orleans School of Cooking as a place where he could use the food of New Orleans as a vehicle to dispel the myths and misconceptions many visitors and locals held about the Crescent City. Both the New Orleans School of Cooking and Louisiana General Store earned many nationally acclaimed awards and honors with Joe as the self proclaimed king and Keeper of the Pots and Pans. In 1995 he abdicated his thrown to pursue new adventures and to boldly go where few have dared.
He's the world's only professional tailgater. Joe's latest adventure has been traveling across the country as the Commissioner of Tailgating to cook and eat in the parking lot, or as he refers to it, "America's last real neighborhood."
For three consecutive years his Tailgating America Tours have visited every NFL, many NCAA and NASCAR events in the JoeMobile, a 40 ft. luxury motorcoach that he calls home. Joe, accompanied by Praline his cat, (she's the navigator), is searching for the Tailgating Championship to be awarded at Super Bowl. The Tour has generated national interest. It has been documented in a Coca-Cola commercial and on the web at www.tailgating.com.
The Commissioner has been featured on CNN Headline News, The Today Show, Good Morning America, ESPN Game Night, Fox Sports, TNN's Crook and Chase, numerous local radio & TV and the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
Joe is a self-taught culinarian, having learned the ways of Louisiana food through direct experience in the kitchens of chefs and mothers alike. He does not consider himself a chef, but a food enthusiast and lover of calories. He has traveled across the country and around the world as spokesman for national corporations and as the ambassador of New Orleans and Louisiana. Joe previously hosted a regular program on The Disney Channel, and has been the subject of various national and international television and print media programs and articles.
For the past six years, he has also been a celebrity judge during the annual Delta Queen Great Steamboat Race. After all these years he is still cooking and eating Louisiana food, and sharing it with whomever will stop long enough to listen and taste.
