My biggest concern for the Minnesota Vikings defense heading into the 2026 season was whether the secondary could hold up with all the trickery being done at the line of scrimmage by Brian Flores’ unit. So far they have and a big reason for that has been an incredible start to the season by Isaiah Rodgers.
Isaiah Rodgers Has Started the Season With A Bang
The Vikings’ defense has been incredible through three games and has to take most of the credit for the Vikings’ 3-0 record (special teams are also playing their part). Quarterback injuries and inconsistencies have plagued Minnesota since last season, and if the team is going to stay the course as contenders, the offense needs to improve, but that’s a separate topic.

Today we look at the defense and particularly Rodgers.
Flores has put opposing quarterbacks in a blender so far this season. He boasts an insane blitz rate, coupled with the use of smoke and mirrors at the line of scrimmage to confuse the offense as to which defenders are actually coming is the talk of the league. This has been the way for Flores since he arrived in Minnesota, and while it has been successful, it has also fallen down when the secondary couldn’t hold up at the back end.
Vikings Cornerbacks Have Started Well
The secondary was an area I thought the Vikings might prioritize this offseason, but they didn’t do as much as I expected.

Minnesota has been struggling at safety with Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson having a rough time in coverage to start the season. However, the cornerbacks are playing well and doing their jobs in coverage, led by Rogers but with Byron Murphy and James Pierre also playing well.
Rodgers is in the top five for coverage grade by Pro Football Focus with an impressive 85.1.
Pierre, who is new to the team having been signed in free agency, also has a very good 74.3 coverage grade from PFF while Murphy has a respectable 64.5. All three of the main Vikings cornerbacks have already snagged their first interception of the season. If the trio of Vikings CBs can keep this up then Minnesota’s defense will continue to terrorize the opposition on a weekly basis.
Rodgers Has the Knack for a Standout Play
Isaiah Rodgers burst onto the scene in Minnesota last season with an incredible display against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 where he received PFF’s first-ever perfectly graded game. On the day, he had an 87-yard pick-six and two forced fumbles, one of which was recovered and returned for a 66-yard touchdown.
He never quite reached those heights again and had a bit of an inconsistent first season in Minnesota.

What he did show was that he has the knack for making big plays, and he has been at it twice already this season. On Sunday, Rodgers brought in the Hail Mary pass for an interception to finish the game and give the Vikings the win over Tampa Bay. The week before Rodgers was named Special Teams player of the Week largely due to an incredible field goal block that was pivotal to the Vikings’ win in Chicago in a low-scoring game.
The question now is can Rodgers keep this up over a 17 game season — he couldn’t manage it last year — but if he can this time the Vikings secondary has found its leader.
